If you have read my iOS 12.1.4 Upgrade Guide, you will know AppleAAPL -0.28%’s latest release is an essential upgrade for all iPhone and iPad owners. Unfortunately, that essential status means you’re also set to experience some nasty surprises…
‘Great Secret Features’ and ‘Nasty Surprises’ are my regular columns investigating the best features / biggest problems hidden behind the headlines.
The problem is Apple iOS 12.1.4 not only introduces some new bugs, it also carries over serious WiFi and cellular data problems from previous releases (1,2,3,4,5) and they are affecting iPhone and iPad owners who had previously managed to avoid them.
“@AppleSupport I updated iPhone 7 Plus yesterday with update 12.1.4. Cellular data virtually none existent! .06-.10 speed. Did all the workarounds could find. Even reset phone. No change. Help!” – source
“@AppleSupport I went to AT&T to troubleshoot the problem. I’ve restarted the device, took out the SIM, reset network settings, deleted the update and reinstalled 12.1.4, still showing “No Service” – source
“@AppleSupport – guys… since I have upgraded phone to 12.1.4 my phone is not accepting any SIM. KINDLY LOOK FOR THE ISSUE on priority. Dear friends don’t upgrade ur ph to 12.1.4 IOS.” – source
“@AppleSupport #iOS_Update_Disaster 12.1.4 is UTTER FAILURE. Updated XS yesterday and ever since lost the Primary SIM connectivity, Hanging Started and Rebooting is taking Hell of a Time. Urgent Attention & Corrective Patch needed.” – source
“@AppleSupport Hey I’m currently on the iPhone XS max and having issues connecting to my home WiFi network I’m on iOS 12.1.4 please help.” – source
Meanwhile, those who are already affected are learning that iOS 12.1.4 offers no fixes for their problems despite Apple missing its self imposed deadline for the release and working on it for another week:
“@AppleSupport Hello, I’m facing a problem with wifi, it always disconnects, i was on ios 12.1.2 and thought updating to 12.1.4 will help but it didn’t. any advice how to fix this? Iphone6s” – source
“@AppleSupport I have a problem connecting to a wifi network, where it is always disconnected, I was on ios 12.1.1, and [thought] the update will help you to 12.1.4 but it did not happen. Any advice how to fix this? Iphone x” – source
“What is wrong @Apple? Please solve this stupid bug. This has been ever since iOS 12.1 . We are losing it. Come on man, we know you can fix this. Using iPhone X. @AppleSupport” – source
“@AppleSupport my iOS 12.1.3 device sometimes can’t access the internet. even though my signal is 4G LTE and my internet quota is still a lot. I have reset my device and others but there is no change. I have updated to 12.1.4 and now I can’t access the internet at all” – source
Combine this with isolated reports of iOS 12.1.4 breaking voice memos, photo thumbnails, email and reports of performance issues with AirPods playback and Touch ID and there are all the hallmarks (despite its delay) of a rushed iOS release.
And yet, you should install iOS 12.1.4. It contains crucial fixes to the audio and video snooping flaws in Group FaceTime calls and a serious Live Photos vulnerability which was being exploited by hackers in the real world. That said, this will be of little comfort to iPhone and iPad owners who will feel installing iOS 12.1.4 is like playing Russian roulette with their devices. As with most iOS problems, the odds are on your side and new bugs are inevitable in any release, but it’s the ongoing device-stopping big ones which are inexcusable to see reappearing again and again…
