While Samsung’s shock Galaxy Fold cancellation is still raw, there’s no denying that in the Galaxy Note 10 it has one of the most exciting (and ambitious) handsets of 2019 coming soon. And it looks set to have a surprising twist.
Following on from his revelation that the Galaxy Note 10 will be “symmetrical”, popular Samsung insider Ice Universe has teased something far more ambitious than we expected: a truly bezel-less, notch-less device with a front camera under the display.
He lays this out in a pair of tantalising tweets. In the first, he posts a symmetrical phone design with a centred punch hole front camera which is “the perfect design until the camera is completely hidden under the screen.” And in the second, he states that Samsung will be among the companies delivering a “Breakthrough in the appearance of smartphones in the second half of the year”.
Moving the notch to the middle of the phone (from the right corner on the Galaxy S10) would not be a breakthrough but, helpfully, Samsung confirmed last year it is working on New Infinity, a display which – yes – enables the front camera to be installed under the screen.
Whichever version Samsung opts for/can deliver in time, however, what’s clear is the company is intent on introducing a symmetrical design to differentiate the Note 10 from the Galaxy S10 range. And Ice Universe clearly knows this: last week he posted a photo of Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, the iconic image symbolising perfect proportions. Da Vinci is the codename of the Galaxy Note 10.
But the Galaxy Note 10’s appeal is unlikely to be just skin deep. 5G versions will be ready at launch with next-gen tech compared to the Galaxy S10. This includes faster storage, a quad-core camera and potentially game-changing high-speed charging. For the first time, there will also be a cheaper Galaxy Note 10e.
Yes, the failure of the Galaxy Fold might soon be a distant memory.
